SUMMARY:Diagnosis and treatment of Peri-implantitis with Prof. Tord Berglundh
DESCRIPTION:Peri-implantitis is a pathological condition occurring in tissues around dental implants. It is caused by microorganisms and characterized by inflammation in the peri-implant connective tissue and loss of supporting bone. Registry data on patients with dental implants will be presented to underpin the relevance of peri-implantitis from a population perspective. Treatment of peri-implantitis will be illustrated and results reported in clinical trials will be presented. Focus will made to the European S3 level Clinical Practice Guideline for the prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases. Factors influencing resolution of peri-implantitis following surgical therapy will be discussed. Thus\, the effect of adjunctive systemic antibiotics in surgical therapy and the influence of implant surface characteristics on the outcome of surgical treatment of peri-implantitis will be addressed. Long-term data on the potential benefit of using bone graft materials in surgical therapy of peri-implantitis will also be presented.  \nTake home messages: \nThe lecture will illustrate the new European Guidelines on the Prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases\, and the following topics will be addressed: \n\nPrinciples and treatment concepts \nWhich methods should be used? Which methods should not be used? \nImplant surface decontamination procedures: Which protocols are recommended?\nSystemic antibiotics: Does it help? Is it justified?\nReconstructive procedures: Are bone grafts or bone substitute materials required?\n\nDr. Tord Berglundh is Professor at the Department of Periodontology\, Institute of Odontology\, Sahlgrenska Academy\, University of Gothenburg. He graduated in December 1978 in Gothenburg and received his certificate as specialist in Periodontics in 1992 and the degree of Odont. Dr. (PhD) in 1993. He was appointed to Associate professor in 1994 and full Professor in Periodontology in 2002 at the University of Gothenburg\, where he has served since 1981.  \nDr. Berglundh is Co-Editor of the textbook Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry and Associate Editor of the journal Clinical Oral Implants Research. He is a member of the editorial board and serves as a referee in several other journals. Dr. Berglundh has received numerous awards and has a Web of Science citation H-index of 93. He has produced about 250 scientific publications within the field of dental implants\, periodontal and peri-implant diseases\, immunology\, genetics\, tissue integration and regeneration.  \n  \nRSVP 27th February to aspwaperth@gmail.com \nNon member payment $250 \nASPWA \nBSB 736011 \nACC 070057

SUMMARY:Entering the abyss – cracks and deep probing depths
DESCRIPTION:Lecture topic:\nEntering the abyss – cracks and deep probing depths.\n\nLecture outline: \nIt is tempting to diagnose a tooth with localized severe periodontal breakdown as a cracked tooth and therefore consider it hopeless. This may not be accurate in many cases.\n\nThis lecture outlines the differential diagnosis for teeth with such severe periodontal pockets and the systematic approach required to achieve an accurate diagnosis and\, in many cases\, avoid unnecessary extraction and potentially complex prosthetic treatment.\n\nBRIEF RESUME\n\nDr Ahmed Saleh\nBDS(Hons)\, DClinDent(UWA)\, MRACDS(perio)\, FRACDS(perio)\n\nAhmed Saleh graduated from the School of Dentistry with honours in 2002. He completed the ADC registration and moved to Australia in 2008.\n\nAhmed practiced general dentistry for 10 years in Egypt and WA before commencing his specialty training in Periodontics and implant dentistry at UWA. He completed his Doctor of Clinical Dentistry Degree in 2014\, in addition to being awarded Membership and Fellowship in Periodontics by the RACDS.\n\nFor the first 5 years after graduating\, he provided\nperiodontal treatment in private practice in Perth\, Geraldton and Albany.\n\nSince completing his specialty program\, Ahmed has contributed in a number of voluntary positions including the Australian Society of periodontology (ASP) state treasurer and president\, ASP federal treasurer and secretary\, RACDS committee\, ADA CPD committee and ADA council member.\n\nHe served as a Clinical Tutor and Senior Lecturer at the School of Dentistry\, UWA for over 10 years. Ahmed has also lectured at different dental conferences nationally and internationally.\nHis areas of interest include multidisciplinary patient management and implant dentistry. He has recently gained interest in Dental research and has commenced a PhD project.
